Hey,

Sorry that it's taken us a while to update this thing. We've been laying a little lower than usual lately. Rhys hurt is hand in a hill billy chainsaw accident before christmas and is still not back to normal. We can't really jam until he's better. Fear not though, as he is on the mend and we'll be trying our best to write some sweet new jams as soon as he can grip a drumstick.

Our buddy Rory kept a diary and took a million photographs during our last Euro/UK tour. He's gradually telling the entire tale in the form of a blog. You can check it out and follow his updates HERE.

We repressed Dead Sea ourselves a few months back and more recently we put the whole record on bandcamp for 'pay what you like' download. If you've got an LP and want a digital version or just the latter then THIS IS THE PLACE TO GET IT.

Sorry for the lack of updates on this here blog, we've been pretty damn busy!

We just got home from a 10 week tour, it was fun. We spent the last month in the UK and mainland Europe with The Slow Death, Mikey Erg! and our buddy Rory from Toronto, it was one hell of a trip! We had a blast hanging out together and it was really cool to catch up with so many friends that we don't get to see nearly enough. So many people helped us out along the way, If you happen to be one of them; Thanks so much, you rule!

Here are a few snaps from my phone and from photographers at a couple of the shows;

We figured out that we have travelled nearly 20,000 miles in the last two and a half months. Now we're home we're going to lay low for a little while. Jenks is starting a PHD in January so we probably won't do any solid touring until the summer. Between now and then it'd be cool if we could write and record a new LP, so we'll do our best to make that happen, we'll see. By no means will we be stagnant, so see you soon no matter what.

Oh yeah, we re pressed 'Dead Sea' ourselves and we have a bunch of new merch (with more on the way) in the SWFU online shop so check it out and buy somebody a cool looking xmas present, or even go all out and treat yourself!

We are back in Swansea for a couple of days before we head out on tour around Europe and the UK with Mikey Erg! and The Slow Death. The last month was an adventure. A lot of people helped us out along the way, without them we really would have been completely stumped. You know who you are; Thank you!

We had a shit load of fun, it was great to catch up with old friends and make some new ones too. We sure are going to miss The Flatliners.

We played at Southsea Fest last night, it was a whole lot of fun. we had to do an in and out jobby and leave pretty soon after we played because of work today but boy was it worth the trip. Thank a lot to Tim and El from Southsea DIY for having us!

We had a really good time at Out Of Spite last Saturday, thanks so much to Simon and Jimmy for putting it all together, it was a blast and well worth the same-day-trip-in-trip-out!

Hey there!

It's been a while since we've updated this thing, sorry about that...

We've been keeping busy, last weekend our buddy ben loaded all of his fancy gadgets into his car, brought them to our practice space and set up a make shift recording studio. We laid down some live recordings of 3 new songs that we've been working on over the past few weeks. 2 of those songs will be featured on a split 7" with THE ARRIVALS (which we are very excited about!)

SSSSNAKES recorded a bunch of new stuff too.

So long as the guys over at ALL IN VINYL don't mind we'll put the new songs online for your listening pleasure as soon as we have the mixes back from ben.

Our next gig is in leeds at OUT OF SPITE XI. Even though it's only been a few months it feels like a while since we got sweaty together. come along and join in, the line up is pretty killer!

Throughout October we will be touring in Cananda and down the east coast of the US, finishing up at THE FEST with THE FLATLINERS. We will also be playing a few shows on the way back up north with STATIC RADIO NJ. Throughout November and December we will be touring in mainland Europe and the UK with Minneapolis' THE SLOW DEATH and MIKEY ERG! Exciting stuff!

We are all out of the copies of Dead Sea that Paper and Plastic send across the Atlantic. We aren't sure when we'll get more but we're trying our best to get hold of some. If you'd like a copy a couple of good UK distros some in stock still. Email thearteries@gmail.com if you're stuck.

We've booked a day early next month to record some new songs for our upcoming split 7" with The Arrivals. Hopefully the record will surface pretty soon after that.

Sorry that we haven't updated this blog in a while, we've been relatively busy but keeping a low profile i guess. We took a day trip to BBC's Maida Vale a few weeks back to record a live session for the Radio One punk show with MIke Davies. I'm not sure when the songs are getting broadcast but as soon as I know i'll stick the details online. It was a fun day out and seemed to go pretty smoothly, to be honest though, even if we'd had a nightmare of a session it would have been smoother than our first visit a few years ago when the van broke down and we got caught in a 14 hour blizzard, ha! Mitty, the studio engineer was the coolest guy ever. at one point he was sitting back casually telling us stories about the time that Nirvana were recording their songs in the same room, as if it was just any other band and just another day at the office for him. What a dude!

We're heading out on tour in the UK tomorrow. We're starting in the big smoke playing this with Broken Few and then aside from getting to go watch the DESCENDENTS (argh!!!) we'll be spending the rest of the tour playing with San Francisco's Dead To Me. we are very excited about that too!

One of the dates is in Swansea, we are putting on the show and hoping for it to be a real hootenanny so if you can make it come on down and have some fun! here is the poster;

We're really disappointed that Paper + Plastic haven't released our Dead Sea LPs in time for this tour. We're sorry if you were looking forward to picking up a copy at a show, we were really looking forward to actually having them available. We feel like the whole situation is out of our hands, we're still waiting and we're unsure as to when we'll have the records in hand.

We've been told that it'll be very soon and when ever that may be we'll be sure to have them online in the SWFU shop right away!

If you have pre ordered a copy from Paper + Plastic, please get in touch with them and and ask where your records are. We feel terrible keeping anyone that wants a copy enough to spend money on it in advance waiting on our behalf.

We very excited to announce that we will be taking part in the All In Vinyl 7" Series and will feature on a 7" alongside Chicago's, The Arrivals. We are yet to record or even write the songs that will be on the record but we're going to get on the case soon. The Arrivals are awesome, if you don't already have their new record then get it right away! It is definitely one of the best records that came out last year.

Right now we're thinking about and planning tours for later on in 2011. The Flatliners tour has been rescheduled for late August, that's gunna kick ass. We're planning to do lots more stuff after that, we're working on it, we'll keep you posted...

AA/DC (the final chapter)

Since our last post we have passed through; Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Germany and France. Getting out of Russia and back into the EU wasn't as bad as we had expected, it took a while and was a total pain in the arse loading all the stuff in and out of the van multiple times in the freezing cold only for a sniffer dog to find out that, at this point in our rock 'n' roll careers, we aren't hard drug smugglers but generally was a pretty smooth operation.

After another insane amount of driving and waiting around at a shopping centre, we got to the venue in Riga, Latvia. It was about 10 am, we all hit the hay then woke up in time to sound check and play the show. The venue was great, as were the promoters. We played one of the most fun shows of the tour, drank a lot of latvian whisky and cheap champagne and danced the night away to a sound track of Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper, Van Halen and good ol' Bonnie T. It was a lot of fun, the best part was that our beds were already set up in the rooms upstairs and we didn't have to hit the road for at least 8 hours!

The next show we played was in poland, we had a cancelation which turned into a driving day with an overnight stay at a hostel in warsaw poland. we drank a bunch of polish beer and spewed out a bunch of polish beer shortly afterwards, it sucked! as did the show the next day, oh well.

The next stop was Regensberg, Germany. the drive to the show was long (of course it was!) BUT it was the last drive that all 9 of us would share in our new found home that was a hired Ford Transit. As van crazy as everybody had turned, we were all bummed that the tour together with ASTPAI was coming to an end. The show was great, ASTPAI were on fire, they were actually on fire at every other show too, they slay live. At the end of our set Jenks and Zock doubled up their guitar heads and we played a quick, 6 man AC/DC show to a room full of head bangers, it was the perfect way to finish this thing.

The next day we got back into our van and headed to Herensberg, Germany to play Out Of Step Fest. It was also LIGHTS OUT!'s last show. the place was completely packed out with German punkers, it was awesome. LIGHTS OUT! absolutely killed it, what a way to go out! Next we headed to Paris, the food was great, the show was great, the company was great. Our friend Till organised it all, thanks Till! Our last show in the mainland was in Le Havre, France, we've played there a few times before and it's always a really good time. Bertrand is the host with the most, in this case 'the most' refers to booze. We woke up really early after the show and headed to Calais to cross the British Channel. Once back in the UK we drove to get a Taco Bell, what a treat that was.

Moldavia - Ukraine - Russia

Leaving Romania was pretty mental, the fog was so thick that you could only see about 2 feet in front of the van, the roads were all single lanes, full of huge pot holes and there were still stray dogs everywhere. Luckily the fog only lasted a few hours. Getting out across the Romanian border was a bit more difficult than getting into Moldavia but generally we got through them both without a hitch. We saw a big owl sitting on the fence welcoming us into Moldavia which was pretty cool. We pulled up near the city centre of Chişinău, (the city that we were playing that night) at 7am and waited for one of the promoters to meet us and show us somewhere where we could sleep. He was a good dude, we named him, 'slash man.' 'S' man took us back to his home, a place that his dad had built with his bare hands and gave us a warm place to sleep for a few hours and then woke us up with the smell of tasty food, it was just what we needed.

We headed to the venue, the guy running the place seemed really worried about the size of our cabs, it was pretty funny. The promoter told us that we are the first 'underground band' from the UK to ever play in Moldavia, I'm not sure if that's true but it sounds cool so we're sticking with it. The show ended up being really great, 2 moldavian TV channels came out to interview and film our sets as well as the british ambassador, I'm pretty sure they didn't realise that we ain't shit! here is the footage from one of the channels. after the show we had a few hours sleep in an apartment that the promoters had rented for us, we then headed for the Ukraine in the early hours of the morning.

Getting out of Moldavia was easy enough, other than the roads, but getting into the Ukraine was a bit of a nightmare. There were 3 parts to the border and we waited at each of them for some time. The lady at the first crossing said, 'No Money, No Ukraine!' so we had to pay up like the suckers that we are. Initially we offered her a copy of dead sea but she didn't seem very impressed at all. A tiny little pooch searched around us and inside the van for drugs, I can't imagine how bad the van must smell with a nose that sensitive, then we were in. It was another billion hours to the city of Kyiv and we arrived late for the show. The punks of Kyiv went crazy for ASTPAI (and rightly so!) that was fun to see, we rocked out and left for some food and some much needed sleep.

The drive to the next show was long as fuck so we had to get up early and get back in the van, our surroundings were now completely covered in thick snow, this didn't help at all seeing as most of the roads are single lanes covered with pot holes. Whilst it was still day light looking out the van window at the white washed Ukrainian scenery was pretty exciting. We were heading for the city of Kharkov in Eastern Ukraine (quite close to the russian border). We arrived late and met the promoter on the city limits, he seemed stressed out that we were late, sorry dude, we were going as fast as we could! He then directed us to the venue, we had to pass some huge electric gates and were greeted by maybe 100 people standing around the van right outside the venue. It turned out that the venue was a practice space, the people packed out the room and went crazy for every song of both bands sets, it was a whole lot of fun, in my opinion the best show of the tour so far, the shitty journey became totally worthwhile.

The next morning we got a lie in as the drive to Belgorod in Russia was only 2 hours, wow!

We gave ourselves a safety 5 because we heard so many horror stories about crossing the Russian border police. As it turned out, leaving the Ukraine was actually a lot more hassle than entering Russia. Getting through the Russisan border took about 2 hours and was really really cold but everything went smoothly and the cops were surprisingly pleasant towards us. Soon enough we were at the venue in Belgorgod Russia. The show ended up blowing goats, the promoter was hospitable and there were a few people that were at the show the night before, playing in opening bands but the rest of the crowd was made up of a table of polo neck, smart leather jacket wearing, grown up, drunk, aggressive weirdos. They shouted stuff like, 'Fuck off, you!' in between songs. Both bands blitzed through the sets and we got in the van to make the over night drive to Moscow. The night drive was real snowy, we had to go slow, really slow! What should have taken 8 hours took more like 16. Not having a gps system or maps or being able to read russian street signs definitely didn't aid the situation. BUT we made it, Zock and Walter from ASTPAI are driving machines, they kept it safe at the wheel, even with these pros in charge we almost took a few spills, the lorry drivers in Russia are all on crack I think. We were really lost when we got into Moscow (in the afternoon of the following day!) so we stopped at a shopping centre and waited there for the promoters. We were finally found so we quickly visited the Red Square before heading to the venue, it was a long day. The show turned out to be really great, it's pretty amazing how having a fun show can totally erase all the stress, bullshit and grumpy attitude that you might have built up during the time before you play. Pretty lucky for us.

The initial plan was to do another night long drive after the show to get to St. Petersburg but after the night and day we had endured, we decided that getting a few hours sleep and leaving early would be the only sensible option. We headed to the hostel that the promoter had arranged for us and eventually checked in, by this time we had about 4 hours before we had to leave again. The hostel was great but the showers were something else! They were in the dark basement, lets just say that Tim, Rhys and I were scared whilst we were down there. turned out that the towels we were given were more like flannels so we ran up 10 flights of stairs to our rooms with our balls hanging out, that got rid of the previous fear sufficiently.

We were back on the road the next day by 10am, heading for St. Petersburg and excited to see the city, we hadn't seen much of Moscow at all. We'd heard from some people that the journey should take 6 hours, 8 from others. We went with 10 for safety and let the promoter know that we wouldn't be at the venue to sound check or supply backline but not to worry as we'd be there in good time. The Russian roads struck again! We drove all day long, it was snowing non-stop and so cold that any bottles of liquid that we had inside the van were frozen solid, as well as a thick layer of ice on the inside of all the windows. the roads were fucked and the lorries were out in full force, generally all on single lane highways, with mentalists overtaking each other by driving down the middle of the 2 lanes in between the lorries and the oncoming traffic. The journey took over 12 hours and we didn't know where to go once we got to the city. We realised once we got there that we might have to leave for Latvia after the show to make it to the next show on time. St. Petersburg looked beautiful, the thought of not seeing anything other than the venue and then sitting in the van for another night and day was too much for anyone to comprehend at this time. We met with the promoter at a huge square and ran to the venue only carrying our guitars. We had 50 minutes for both bands to play before the venue closed for the night. We were so late that lots of the crowd had already gone home. We plugged into the amps that were already on stage and blitzed the hell out of about 7 songs, it was like punk rock therapy to save your broken van brain. The people that were still at the show got into it and we were crowd surfing and and fucking around as much as possible during our 15 minute set. ASTPAI did the same and then we loaded out again, I reckon that's a new world record. We were in the venue for less than 90 minutes.

Right now we are still in St. Petersburg. The Russian roads got the better of us and last night we realised that to make it to the show in Latvia on time due to the extra time at the russian border (apparently leaving the county is really intense) we would have had to get back in the van and start driving right after. Nobody had slept, nobody had eaten and less importantly nobody had washed. The bottom line was that we were exhausted, especially the driving machine that is Zock Astpai, what a hero! Luckily for us the promoter in Latvia has postponed the show by a day so we now have a day off here in St. Petersburg, we have all caught up on sleep and now we're going to check out some of this impressive city before heading to Latvia this evening. The adventure isn't over yet, so far it's been one hell of a trip.

AA/DC so far so gute

hey, so where 7 days into this tour, we started last week playing portsmouth, thanks so much to El and Tim for looking after us and being great hosts, it was a real good send off. after a few hours sleep we left south sea and travelled directly to austria. it was a long trip, it took nearly 21 hours and rained like a mother fucker the whole way, but we made it so what the heck! it was the early hours of the morning when we arrived in wiener neustadt (ASTPAIville) and there was a tasty meal an a room full of mattresses waiting for us. we slept off the caffeine and stir-crazy-inside-the-van-for-20-hours-feeling and then we were good to go!

since then we played and travelled through Austria, Hungary and now we are in Romania, every show so far has been really good, it's awesome to visit be somewhere that we have never even been close to before and have people come out to the show and enjoy themselves, especially when the drives in-between the cities are long and really frickin' sketchy as shit! yesterday's drive was pretty incredible, we spent 8 hours driving through the romanian mountains on the way to the capital city, bucharest. you see stray dogs on almost every corner. and some of the views were pretty amazing. BANGERS told us of how they spotted a road side bear when completing the same journey so i spent every second that i was awake hoping to see a grizzly tearing something apart, no joy, oh well.

the show in bucharest last night was a whole lot of fun, we hung out at the bar for a few hours once we were all packed up and enjoyed some romanian beers and then some romanian chip and chilli kebabs that didn't cost much more than a quid each! we are supposed to be playing in lasi, in eastern romania tonight but we found out last night that the man has shut down the venue because of illegitimate paperwork or some shit. having a night off blows, especially when your paying for a hire van by the day but when there is nothing you can do about it you just have to keep on keepin' on. the silver lining is that we now have time to go and check out this happening capital city for a few hours before heading directly to moldavia. we've decided to use this night off as extra border crossing time as we've heard a lot of hour stories of corrupt border patrol officers and painfully slow queues.

happy new year!

2010 was pretty happening, we managed to do quite a lot of things, we're going to try our best to keep busy throughout this year too. we are heading out on tour for a while in a week or so. the UK tour that we had planned for february with THE FLATLINERS and OK PILOT has been postponed, that's a real shame BUT we have managed to put a replacement UK tour together instead, it's still kind of in the works but should be sorted within the next week. we should have copies of Dead Sea on LP with us during that tour, that'll be cool!

since myspace has gone to shit ~~here are all the dates we have coming up~~; (look right - woohoo)

i'm a mong with the internet so our friend owen is going to show me how to permanently keep our tour dates visible on this blog, as well as adding a music player, once that's done then this here blog will be all the arteries info that any one person can handle at once. other 2011 plans of ours include mainland euro, n.american tours and writing and recoding a bunch of new songs. watch this space...

we are back home right now and staying put until january, the last 3 months have been a lot of fun, thanks again to everyone that helped us out, there were a lot of you, we really appreciate it! we are all working or at least trying to get work over december and the first week of january and then we are off on tour again. we're heading to eastern europe for a few weeks with our good friends ASTPAI and as soon as we get back to the UK we will be on tour for the best part of two weeks with THE FLATLINERS and OK PILOT, exciting stuff! all of the dates will be online really soon, there are still a couple of things to figure out so bare with us...

we got beck to new jersey today, we left gainesville at 7pm yesterday, it was one hell of a drive, us brits aren't used to that, but then again we're not used to 5 hour energy shots either! the tour down to The Fest with STATIC RADIO NJ was a total blast, every show was a lot of fun and we saw some really cool and really strange places, we also made a lot of new friends and got the chance to catch up with some old buddies too. we also had the chance to play with some bodacious bands; Young Livers, Transgressions, Iron Chic, Pacer, Big Eyes, Back Pocket, The Great Explainer, The Arrivals to name a few...

Thanks to everyone that helped us out with a show and a place to stay, we really appreciate the help, you rule!

we made it into the states, after a long journey on a budget airline with cds in our bags and (almost) shit in our pants, take that customs! right now we're in mike Static Radio's house hanging out with his HUGE dog. tonight we are playing in philly with our british brethren Pacer, how lovely to see some familiar faces, can't wait!

we're in belfast right now, it seems pretty cool. we haven't really seen much of the city other than the venue and the promoter's friends house. we went there for some food a minute ago, he had a cool dog named jessica that jumped all over us. dogs rule!

on the way over here today we saw a rock star mural painted on the side of a building that featured the likes of slash, blondie, bowie, ozzy, prince and a bunch more, tim wanted to get involved!

it was a pretty intense piece of art, above this, out of shot was a rock star heaven section that featured jim morrison, phil lynott etc. and then above that there was a huge image of elvis touching fingers with god, fucking eh! what's weird is that there was no sign of the all time rock hero anywhere!?

after that we hung out near a lake for a few hours and kicked a football around...

here are some photos form the last week or so of the tour that we just did with the finger Bangers. we had a bit of van trouble a few weeks in and ended up having to cancel 2 shows due to a problem with the gear box. we headed back to the UK a day early and picked up our van from swansea then played a show in manchester and a show in pontefract, they were both a lot of fun, as was the whole tour in fact! thanks so much to Bangers for looking after us and making it so enjoyable...

we are back home for a few days right now. our album release show is in swansea on friday night!

we head over to ireland for the first time ever straight after we play and then we're on tour in the uk for about a week. we've never been to ireland, we're pretty excited. all of the details of the tour can be found here.

our buddy luk 'el photo' shot some photos whilst we were playing in salzburg, austria the other night. it was a cool show and seemed like a really beautiful part of the world. unfortunately the only bits that we saw were the venue and petrol station due to a mega drive that we had to nail straight after we played. apparently there are loads of incredible lakes and mountains to check out, we're definitely going to go back and do that!

we have been having a whole lot of fun on this here tour with Bangers. there have been a lot of retarded long drives due to retarded planning, too many moon lit sleeps and everything seems to be pretty consistently breaking/falling apart. but despite the glitches we're keepin' on keepin'on and are reveling in good times.

i've been trying my best to film a load of shit too but i can't upload any of it to my computer right now, when i figure out how to do that i'm going to try and make a tour video of some sort. so far it will mainly involve failed skate tricks and live footage that is a bit too dark to view.

we drove for 5 hours to nantes today only to learn that the show had been cancelled. apparently it was because there was a rowdy night this gone saturday and the police showed up due to noise complaints. we looked at the listings and saturday's entertainment was an acoustic comedy act. weird.

nevertheless, we are having a good time, we checked out the skate park and went and got a bunch of beers. a friendly girl who is a friend of a friend has let us stay at her brothers apartment, i don't think he knows we are here!

so far so good, we've played 3 shows and 2 have been really fucking fun the other one was just ok but somehow the venue got us a hotel room which is great as we have been able to shower and pillage the breakfast buffet for future eating.

our good friend minty took a few snaps at the show in kingston on thursday night;

it was a whole lot of fun, Sauna Youth and Social Club were really fucking good! Foster of Pacer was also pretty entertaining throughout the night i wish i could quote him on here but i fear for his safety. thanks very much to microphone head for being a wonderful host.

last night we made a bunch of king of the road style challenges for the rest of the shows they include stuff like 'death metal song introductions' and 'YMCA dance bridge' hopefully Bangers will get lumped with all the embarrassing ones, fingers crossed! tonight we are playing in Le Harve, Fr, we are each going to try and pull of a cover song from 'Enema Of The State.' i'm not sure which song we're going to pick yet but the plan is to learn it in the van later today.

We are heading back to Gainesville florida once again this October to play at No Idea Record's The Fest 9!

We are very excited! We are going to be touring down the East Coast from New York to Florida a week or so with our bestest buddies Static Radio NJ... COWABUNGA!

we are playing our first show since the beginning of may tomorrow night in east london. it should be a lot of fun, we are going to play some new songs i think...

recording 'Dead Sea' - Day 6

We carried on with vocals as soon as we got to the studio yesterday morning, we had four songs and a cover to do...

We used the same technique of Miles doing a song or two and then giving him a breather whilst i did the back ups, we got there in the end. Once the vocals were done we had a list of various other things that we still had to record, but before we could get down to doing all that stuff Pugs had to lay down one line in the Dead Milkmen cover that we have recorded, he did it in one take, what a pro!

The cover, as well as another song is going to be featured on a split 7" entitled, 'Banana Split' with New Jersey's Static Radio some time soon.

We recorded a bunch of roomy sounding screams and breathing and shit,

we recorded our friend Nic saying a couple of lines of a song over the phone

and we recorded a bunch of other bits too that will be subtly featured in various places on the record so look out for them.

That was it, we were done!

Now all that is left to do is mixing and mastering. Tim had time to mix one song and gave it to us to take away and think about, i think it sounds great so in theory mixing the rest of them shouldn't be so hard. We are heading back to the studio this coming friday to finalise everything, then the plan is to get it released as soon as possible, hopefully before october, fingers crossed!

Recording 'Dead Sea' - Day 5

Yesterday we did vocals all day long!

There were a shit load of songs to get through, ideally we wanted to get them all done so that we could spend the whole of the final day mixing but it didn't really work out this way, we did get a lot done though, it's just that everything takes way longer than we initially think... especially the small things and it's the little things that count right?

(insert small dick joke here)

Miles has loads of super high parts and and screamy bits in these songs so to keep him from blowing his voice out he would do a couple of full songs and then i would do the back ups straight away so that he could have a little rest...

I suck at singing, the difference between mine and Miles' singing stamina is pretty obvious when we are recording. I pretty much blew my voice out just doing the back ups.

arghhh wooo oohhh ahhh, kinda like that but load as sh*t!

In-between songs we hung out in the control room, we watched a little bit of this, some of this and a whole lot of t h e s e!

By the end of the day the checklist looked like this, it was actually pretty productive in hindsight.

Recording 'Dead Sea' - Day 4

I didn't get to the studio until lunch time yesterday, Jenks cracked on with his guitar parts until about 3:30 and then Tim finished off the rest of his parts, it took all day long but the geetars got finished!

Big Bad Roy Jenksins popped in for a quick listen on his way home from work, if we get time Roy is going to record a few guitar licks for one of the songs, i really hope we get time!

that is more or less all that happened yesterday i think... sorry that this post is kind of boring, blame Jenks and Tim i guess. We are doing the vocals tomorrow/today (geez) and then this record is done...

Last week our friend Owen Richards visited us and come to a practice session to take some photos to put together for the insert and what not - we went for a Joe's Ice Cream too.

Recording 'Dead Sea' - Day 3

Yesterday we continued with the geetars...

Jenks got right into it from the word go and powered through about 5 songs

Then Tim showed up. This was the first time Tim had been here because of his grueling work schedule as Timmy train driver. As he is so pushed for time he had to boot Jenks out of the live room and get right to work with his own guitar parts - Jenks wasn't happy about this at all because he was "in the zone."

Tim got down to business and was killing lick after lick.

Meanwhile the rest of us sat around and listened, we also drank lots of coffee... again!

I don't usually drink any coffee at all, the caffeine is starting to mess with my mind i think.

There are quite a few songs on this record that have plenty of room for feedback and dynamic noise. Yesterday we spent quite a lot of time fucking around with pedals to try and create intense feed back, it was pretty fun listening to Tim and Jenks fuck around with it. Miles is a bit of a pro when it comes to this so he was watching them like a hawk and giving them all kinds of tips. For example, if you flip the guitar around and face it at the cabinet then you get high tones, where as holding it to the cab with the strings facing you get low tones, pretty cool right!?

These are some of the pedals the they used, most of the coolest noise was created by a pedal named, 'Dr. Distorto!'

Things are moving along swiftly but these damn 6 string folk sure take their sweet time over the in between stuff! This is what the check list looked like at 7pm;

Hopefully we will start vocals the next day (which is today as I am writing this, man, this coffee is confusing the space/time continuum in my branium.)

Recording 'Dead Sea' - Day 2

Yesterday we arrived on time, the drive up was pretty entertaining, we listened to some Richard Pryor stand up, i would like to quote some of his jokes but they don't come across quite the same so i'm not gunna bother, the main gist of it was a story involving a voodoo lady healing his friends swollen feet by pissing on them, it's a gas!

Anyways... we started by listening to everything that we laid down the day before just incase we had to re do some of it and we did, so we got right to it!

We had 6 songs and a cover to do, it took a while but we got into it eventually

It's been a while since we recorded like this. The recording process for songs that we recorded for 7"s and various other stuff at the end of last summer and earlier this year was pretty different, we did everything live all in the same room, with no headphones, played one or two takes and then moved on and just ignored little mistakes, we did the same thing with the demos of these songs and it's what we've gotten used to. Doing things this way is great and i'm sure that we will continue to use the same process again with future recordings but right now we are trying to get everything right and it can be pretty frustrating, especially with drums - There are so many little things going on and if just one of these tiny variables gets missed then we have to start over! That's the part that we aren't totally used to i guess.

I don't know if it's an excuse that we have told ourselves but yesterday we figured out that there is no such thing as a perfect take and maybe this is another excuse but i think that it's probably a good thing. It's not like we're fucking session musicians, we're a punk band and mistakes are human right?

So yeah, we just powered through all morning. By about 2:30 we were getting hungry and tired and takes were getting worse so we took a break for lunch.

After lunch we finished off the last couple of songs and recorded a Dead Milkmen cover, then we were done! well, drums and bass that is...

sweet!

By this time it was about 5pm, Big Tim did some futurising stuff to the tracks on his computer and we made sure we had nailed everything, then Jenks got ready to play some guitar. Meanwhile we watched videos of Dwight Schrute on you tube and played with a fat cat.

Then a lead broke and needed re-soldering and shit, it was almost 7 so we called it a day.

We are back here right now and Jenks is killing it, he spent the last 20 minutes playing with feed back!

Recording our 2nd album - Day 1!

Woah... it's been a while!

so, since our last post we have been busy bees, the months of April, May and early June were pretty much engulfed with physics and photography degrees/exams, we only played one show in May and before that the last shows we played were on that short UK tour with Bangers in mid March!

But... it's not like we've been doing nothing in between - we've been playing with some ideas for new songs since the end of last year and pretty much since January this year, we have been writing new songs with the intention putting them together as a full length album.

We got about 12 new tunes together and pretty much completed before shit got physics crazy and demoed them live at our practice space in late April. This worked out well as it gave us time to sit on the songs and think about them while all the uni junk was happening throughout May/early June.

From about the second week of June until last weekend we have been working on the songs we demoed (and some more new ones too) fucking with the structures and trying to get everything just where it needs to be.

We started recording yesterday, we are back with Big Tim Hamil at Sonic One (the same place that we recorded the Blood, Sweat and Beers 10"s and LP.) we will be here for 6 days in total...

We Got here a little late yesterday because Miles was still in the shower when i went to pick him up and getting up early sucks. But once we got here we talked about what we want in terms of the sound of this record and the factors that we are into regarding the sound and feel of the live demos that we did in April. We talked with Big Tim about the big open drum sound and driving, dirty bass sound on records such as Nirvana's In Utero Weezer's Pinkerton. That was pretty much as far as we went, by the time we were recording Beers I think Tim started to understand us properly so it's not like we were talking about these things to someone that had never heard our music - we set up our stuff up and then started playing with the sound.

Once we got the drums and bass sounding cool we drank a shit load of coffee and then had lunch

we watched the fresh pots video on you tube a few times and then drank some more coffee

then we started recording bass and drums...

It was about 3:30 by the time we started laying stuff down, in the past we have just rocked up and started recording pretty much as soon as everything is mic-ed up, but not this time - it was cool to take much more time over the sound before we started getting into it.

We made one of these so that we don't forget to do anything;

Oh yeah, this new record is going to be called, Dead Sea.

We played at Le Pub last night, it was a lot of fun, but it sure was hot, all five of us were pretty much dead after our set, it's probably not healthy to sweat that much in winter! Recording El's songs the other week...

A couple of weeks ago we went down to Pete Miles in Devon to record two songs that our lovely friend El Morgan had written and then sent to us (the demos that El sent us are on her myspace page 'blah blah blah' and 'ballroom') to be turned into arteries kinda songs (but with El on vocals) for the B Side of a split 7" with Kelly Kemp and Bangers doing to the sort of thing (but with Kelly's songs) on the A Side.

anyways... so we got to Pete's at about 2pm on the sunday and waited around for a couple of hours as we hadn't spoken for a couple of days and the last time we talked we just said 'sunday afternoon.' Once it got to to 5pm we started to worry, and we couldn't get hold of Pete! once we did, it turned out that there had been some confusion as to wether or not the session had been confirmed and at the time Pete was in Brighton, oh dear!

That day was the only day that ourselves and El could get together to record the songs so we decided that we may as well wait for Pete and just blast them out when he got home. So that's what we did, but stuff like this always seems to take longer than expected... Pete made it home by about half past midnight , by the time we had all drank a couple of coffees , and everything was set up/miked up and sound checked it was gone 2am before we hit record! Once we got going we got through the songs really quickly, i think we ended up using the first take for one and the 3rd take for the other, then we had a listen back, Pete set up ready to record the vocals, then El laid down her vocals, Miles laid down his back ups and then we spent way too long messing around with about 10 seconds of gang vocals at the end of one of the songs, by the time we were done it has gone 4am, but we were all wired on coffee so Pete suggested that we demo a bunch of new songs!

Pete's dog Ali had had enough!

We left Devon at 6am on the monday and drove back to Swansea (via Bristol) hitting all the morning rush hour traffic outside every city on the way and got home at 10am - it was a pretty strange 24 hours to say the least!

But... The songs came out sounding cool! right now they are being mixed and mastered with the Bangers tracks and then i guess they will be out on 7" asap, i'm not sure of any other info on the release but we will keep you posted.

In February we are playing Brighton Zine Fest '10 and a couple of shows with THE PLIGHT and THE COMPUTERS.

We had an awesome couple of days, we played with Snuff and The Computers at the Garage in London last Saturday, at Punk n Bowl III in Bloomsbury on Sunday and had our Xmas show in Swansea on Monday with Portraits, Bangers and The Computers - we had a blast!

We have had a bit of a nightmare venue wise with next week's christmas show, but we have finally sorted it out.

The show is now being held upstairs (on the floor) at SIN CITY, thanks to them for bailing us out at last minute...

We played a show at The Cross Kings in London in June (i think) and someone has put our set up on You Tube, they must have had the camera linked up to the sound desk or something because it sounds pretty good. This was the fist show that we ever played Nail Scale at and it was probably one of the first times that we played Mutual friends too. Anyways, it's in three parts - check it out below...

So our friend's in the band BANGERS had this idea of putting out a 7" featuring new songs from a bunch of UK bands that are going to be playing this years FEST 8.He asked us to be one of the bands featured on the record, it sounded like a great idea so we said yes but the problem was that we didn't know when we were going to be able to record a song for it.
This was all a couple of months ago, and at the time we had a busy couple of weeks/months ahead with various tours. Andrew (from Bangers) said that he needed the song ASAP so i called Pete Miles to see if he had any free studio time over the next week or so. He told me that he was completely swamped and the only time that he could fit us in was that very night!this phone call was made at about 5:30pm, Pete's studio is a good 4 hour drive from Swansea and weren't even able to leave until 7:30 because one of us was in work that day.Here's the other thing, the only new/unspoken for song that we had at the time was written about 2 days before and we had probably only run through it fully once or twice...Even so, we jumped in the van and headed to Pete's in Devon, by the time we got to him it was midnight. Luckily BANGERS had been recording that day so there was already a backline set up, everything was ready to go.We nailed a few cups of coffee and gave it a try.The first take was actually pretty good considering, Jenks had to write his guitar solo in the van on the way there!
Pete came in and told us that the coffee was too strong, we were too loud, then miles came in and said that we played it too fast and too sloppy, we took some deep breathes waited for the green light and gave it another shot. nailed it - i don't know why we don't do all of our recording sessions in the middle on the night, unprepared and buzzed on caffeine!
All we had to do then was wait for Miles to lay down his vocal track (which we had never heard before!) then we were done, Pete burned the song onto a CD told us to leave and off we went- we were in and out in just over an hour!
To cut a long story short...This 7" is Almost out and for a very limited time you can download the whole thing completely free of charge!That's a brand new song from us, OK Pilot, Bangers and Brothers for FREE!

what a busy week! we have been playing shows pretty much every night since friday, until yesterday we were all in a car because our van was having some work done to it, we have it back now so that rules!
by day, we have been trying not to get kicked out of uni, working and sorting out everything for the 7" release show. the 7" is looking pretty sweet but there is still loads to do, here are some photos of the processes;

only 500 more to go! i'm off to the print room, we are playing in Exeter tonight with loads '0 awesome bands... come!

Hey,

So we have recently been quite busy planning stuff, writing stuff, practicing stuff and recording stuff. Last Friday we spontaneously drove down to Devon to record another new song with Pete Miles in the middle of the night. It was pretty fun, we left Swansea late because Tim was working 'til 8, by the time we got to Pete's it was 11pm we set up and rocked out the song live, it's called 'Nail Scale.' it was so new that Miles' vocals take was the first time any of us had heard the words and Jenks pretty much wrote his solo in the van on the way there.

So now we have 5 brand spanking new songs recorded and ready to be put onto records... we are pretty excited about the releases! ;

- 2 songs, 'Shitty Band' and 'Mutual Friends' are going on a split 7" with the mighty CUT UPS.

- 2 songs, 'Paying For The Name' and 'Turborocket' are being featured on a 7" as part of the 'Art Of The Underground' single series!

- and 'Nail Scale' will be featured on a 4 way split 7" (pretty appropriately) named 'Brits Abroad' along with our friends BANGERS, BROTHERS and OK PILOT.

All 3 of these 7 inches will be out this October. We will stick some of the new songs online on myspace or some shit soon.

Some more good news is the news that Black Numbers are going to re-release our debut album 'Blood, Sweat & Beers' on pink 12" (also this October) the record is going to be ready in time for our east coast tour with STATIC RADIO n.j. down to Fest 8, hopefully we will still have plenty of copies to bring back to the UK with us.

that is pretty much it i think, we have a lot to do, there is artwork to be done, wax colours to decide, sleeves to fold and print - jeez, it's gunna be a busy couple of months, but fuck yeah life's a garden dig it, right?

On monday we spent the day with Pete Miles at his home/studio in the beautiful Devonshire countryside and recorded four new songs; two to go on our forthcoming split 7" with The Cut Ups and two to go on something else...

Recording the songs went really well, we did everything live apart from vocals, it was a sweaty blast!

We are doing a bunch of shows next week, go to our myspace page to see the details, the first show is in Brixton at the windmill, it's on Tuesday, the last show is in Cardiff at Welsh club with our friends, Portraits and Harbour, it's on Friday and the ones in between are in Brighton and Exeter.

The mini tour that we played the week before last was a blast!

We played a show with BANGERS in our friend Steve 'microphonehead' s flat in Kinston the morning after the show in London, it was loads of fun (thanks Steve!) somehow it didn't get shut down. we played a bunch of covers and a bunch of our own songs, as did BANGERS, at one point Rhys, Roo and I sort of played a cover of 'Six Pack' by BLACK FLAG - Roo learnt it in the toilet moments before...

A bunch of photos were taken but i don't know who took them, if i get my hands on any i will upload them. Our friend Kerry filmed some of it on her sexy new iphone - here is some of the footage;

we just had our second band practice in our new top secret location - it was pretty cool! we now kinda have 3 new songs kinda fully finished and the are FUN to play!

i guess that these three songs will be the songs that go on our forthcoming 7", who knows?
jenks is in bristol revising for science so he has no idea how to play them. if he comes home in time to nail them then i reckon we will play them at the lemuria show in sigma on june 1oth.

we had a blast in bristol on saturday, we played at the fiddler's with propagandhi who were awesome!

we aren't playing any shows 'til june because we are all busy doing other shit;
jenks and miles who have pretty heavy scientific commitments, rhys is working loads, and me and tim are swamped in uni. even though this is the case, we are doing our best to get together and write a bunch of new songs. hopefully we can get some nailed and record them in july . if that happens we will then put out a split 7", oh baby!

we have a new van, and it's rad becuase it's great on diesel consumption, doesn't smell bad and is reliable. but one thing that REALLY sucked about parting with our old van was saying bye to all the stickers that we had stuck on it, what a shame...

oh well, its time to sticker up the new van i guess!
